Circle of Friends for Kids is a non-profit institution registered both in Kenya and the US to help educate bright needy students in Kenya.
The organization was founded in 2005 as a self-help organization and later registered as a Kenyan based Non-Governmental Organization in 2016. Our main objective is to enable determined youth with disadvantaged backgrounds to pay school fees throughout their secondary education.
We also aim at providing a channel for similarly inspired people to identify and support such children as we have has solely relied on individual donations.
According to the World Bank 2010, only 29% of the population aged 25 and above had attained or completed lower Secondary School education. This significantly affects the ability of the population to participate in work for pay and the skills and competencies of the population. Further, a report by Afrobarometer in 2020 showed that poverty levels in Kenya were on the rise with nearly a half of Kenyans lacking basic commodities such as clean water, food, medicine and cash incomes due to the rising levels of inflation.
Our vision is to become an instrument of hope and encouragement to the less fortunate children by giving them the chance to secure a better future through education and guidance, and to become a credible yet noble channel through which able members of our society who have similar intensions can reach out to such children.
To mentor and give grants to children who have been rendered economically hopeless by various life situations including the HIV/AIDS scourge with the aim of alleviating poverty and improving lives of as many children as we can.

Our program seeks to fight this cycle of poverty by educating at least one person in the household to enable them access entrepreneurial and/or employment opportunities that improve their socio-economic status and that of their household. We focus on educating bright children who struggle with poverty due to variety of reasons such as being orphaned, having invalid/disabled parents/guardians, affected or infected by HIV/AIDS and more recently those who have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the past our program has focused on Secondary education for children in Nairobi and Nyeri counties with the intension of rolling out to the rest of the country. While the government focuses on 100% transition of students from primary to Secondary, we focus on ensuring these children are able to access quality Secondary and higher education and do not drop out of School due to lack of fees.
Target 1 of Kenya’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 seeks to ensure that all children complete quality free and equitable primary and Secondary education. The Bill of Rights in the Constitution of Kenya 2010 also recognizes the need for basic education for all children. Part of the government’s effort to attain this goal include the 2003 launch of Free Primary Education that has seen the gross enrolment rate (GER) increase across the country.
Research has shown that children and adolescents are at important periods of development because the brain continues to mature and develop throughout childhood and adolescence. During this time the region of the brain responsible for emotional reactions has been formed, but the area that controls reasoning and regulates emotion has not fully developed. Children and adolescents are therefore more likely to engage in impulsive and risky behavior such as aggression, drug abuse, delinquency, poor performance in School and so forth.
COFFKIDS plans to host annual sports days that will allow the community and students participate in a range of sporting activities. This will also be a forum and opportunity for visiting sponsors to interact with the community.
COFFKIDS has relied largely on donations from well-wishers to fund its programmes. In order to ensure the sustainability and continuation of the program, COFFKIDS plans to continue raising money from Grants from Donor institutions, in addition to the personal donations by well-wishers, groups and community. We shall continue with the charity walks and conduct annual sporting events that will raise funds through ticket sales, sale of snacks and soft drinks, and rent of sporting equipment.
With many of the previous sponsorship beneficiaries joining the job market, we are mentoring and encouraging them to voluntarily join COFFKIDS as mentors and sponsors as a means of giving back to the society.
As a medical student at Moi University CHS, based in Eldoret Town. My journey with the COFFKIDS commenced immediately I completed my Primary School examinations. They held my hand throughout high School life in Nyeri High School, catering for my fees. They are also walking with me in my campus life, evident in that my fee so far has already been covered. My life at COFFKIDS has been of paramount benefits. I’ve been connected to a resourceful mentor who is ever willing to direct and is kind to me, thus saving me from haphazard and irrational decisions. The warm family of COFFKIDS has also made sure that I can achieve my academic goal with peace of mind by eliminating the fear of being sent home for School fees. By this, I can be able to maximize on my studies. I am an aspiring Urologist.
Gachuhi Simon GathogoI joined the circle of friends for kids in the year 2012 at form one. The circle supported me throughout high School in Chinga girls where I scored a B- in KCSE. During the four-year period I was fully supported in terms of School fees, guidance and mentorship from the annual meet and greet forums. For all that, I am indeed very grateful. I have not joined College yet but planning on joining pretty soon. I am currently working with Kenya Rural Roads Authority in the materials testing section. I am really thankful to the team at Circle of Friends for Kids for the support, guidance and mentorship. My prayer is that someday I will be able to help more kids in future through the Circle. I am proud and glad to be associated with the circle of friends for kids. God bless you exceeding abundantly and beyond. Again, Thank you!
Mary Wangechi KamuyuI am a beneficiary of Circle of Friends for Kids (COFFKIDS). I was blessed to join Nyeri High School in 2012 and struggled to pay School fees until COFFKIDS took me in in 2014 and help see me through my high School. I joined Presbyterian University of East Africa in 2016 and pursued a degree in Computer Science. In campus I engaged in extra curriculum activities and was crowned 1st Runners Up male model in the University and Mr. Kikuyu Campus 2017-2018, 2018-2020 respectively. I was nominated into the Students council as Publicity & Marketing Director during that period. I graduated on 6th December 2019, stayed at home for a while and then got a job. COFFKIDS through our Mum Madam Anne Muthoga is heaven-sent. I wouldn’t find enough words to thank you for your unending support. May God bless you abundantly
